2023 GMC Jimmy: Introducing All-New Modern Midsize SUV Special Reviews

Posted on

2023 GMC Jimmy: Offered between 1970 and 1991, the GMC Jimmy was the Big Red version of the iconic K5 Chevy Blazer, providing all the good old classic SUV goodies before being replaced by the GMC Yukon. Unsurprisingly, some people are calling for the return of Jimmy’s GMC nameplate. Now, GM Authority showcases what a modern GMC Jimmy might look like.

For now, there’s no indication that GM plans to develop and launch a modern GMC Jimmy. Instead, we made this thing just for fun to see what it would look like.

Our renderings include a front three-quarter view of the AT4X off-road trim level, as well as a rear three-quarter view of the more luxurious Denali trim level. From the start, it was clear that our modern GMC Jimmy was based on the latest third-generation GMC Canyon 2023 pickup, incorporating the truck’s heavily updated GMT 31XX body-on-frame architecture, known internally at GM as the 31XX-2 platform, as well as Canyon styling elements third generation.

The modern Jimmy largely mirrors the Sierra 1500 being grounded from the tip of the front bumper to the B-pillar. Beyond that, Flat Out Autos added a redesigned quarter panel, removed the partition between the cargo box and the cab, and installed the rear seats.

It also developed a removable body-colored hardtop that brought the truck silhouette in line with the second-generation Jimmy. At the rear, the versatile MultiPro tailgate remains, and Jimmy keeps the Sierra rear bumper with integrated steps into every corner.

All told the conversion looks good. We believe GMC could sell a lot of these if it decided to jump back into this segment. The interior is mostly Sierra fare, although the front seats slant forward and the carpet covers the cargo box and the inside of the tailgate. Flat Out Autos hasn’t released any technical details yet, so there’s no word on what Jimmy is powered by.

2023 GMC Jimmy Review

As GM Authorities have discussed in the past, Flat Out Autos’ modern GMC Jimmy offers potential customers the chance to own an off-road SUV alternative to General Motors’ derivative of the Ford Bronco. Now, the price of Jimmy 4X4 has been officially released.

According to social media posts from Flat Out Autos, the base price for the convertible starts at $129,950, including any purchase of a new 2023 GMC Sierra or 2023 Chevy Silverado. Flat Out Autos also offers optional upgrades such as Fox suspension setups, roof racks, and special wheel and tire packages for an additional fee.

It should be noted that only 10 places remain for 2023.

For background, Flat Out Autos took a GMC Sierra 1500 pickup in a Single Cab / Long Bed configuration cut the bed down to 5 feet, 8 inches, and went for true unibody construction. Power-folding rear seats were added at the rear, while the roof was designed to be removable to provide an open-air experience, as desired.

Additionally, there are rumors that other versions of the Jimmy will be offered, including an extended wheelbase variant, as well as a four-door variant. However, only a single cabin style is currently offered.

Designed around the AT4 or Trail Boss trim levels, this particular SUV is powered by the 5.3L V8 L84, which makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque from the factory. As expected from an all-terrain SUV, each unit is equipped with four-wheel drive.

Flat Out Autos brought the GMC Jimmy to build to the 2022 SEMA Show and was showered with positive feedback from fans. Jimmy is on display in the Flat Out Autos booth (Central Hall Booth #24675) beside the 1968 International Travelall Restaurant.

Looking to the future, Flat Out Autos stated that they will be building more off-roader units, and each will be uniquely customized to the client’s specifications.

2023 GMC Jimmy Design

The custom builder was Flat Out Autos, based in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Flat Out has produced some pretty impressive builds, including a modernized K5 Blazer for SEMA, as well as a resto-mod 1967 Chevy Corvette, custom Chevy C10 pickup, and a few others.

However, the next version of the Flat Out Auto looks like a modern two-door GMC Jimmy with a removable roof. Flat Out posted a rendering of the concept on social media, and it sure looks pretty good.

According to the comments, Flat Out Autos will likely offer a modern version of the GMC Jimmy with an extended wheelbase, and possibly even a four-door body style. However, the main offering will be a single cab platform. Under the hood, the store will offer the Duramax HD powertrain as well.

Indeed, this may be very encouraging news for fans of the K5 Chevy Blazer who were disappointed by the re-introduction of the Blazer as a unibody crossover. In contrast, this custom modern GMC Jimmy combines a short body and tall stance but is likely based on the same T1 platform as GM’s full-size trucks and SUVs.

The front is also familiar, draped in the same fascia and styling as the updated 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X. The rendering even shows the AT4X badge located at the bottom corner of the driver’s side grille and on the doors.

Granted, this thing looks ready for off-road duty and includes red tow hooks, chunky tires, and other rugged goods cues.

2023 GMC Jimmy Flat Out Autos

Flat Out Autos GMC Jimmy is a vehicle that many people are excited about. Since the short truck was brought to the SEMA 2022 Show, it’s received great feedback, and according to an Instagram post from the company, since five weeks ago, only 10 build slots are left available for 2023. It’s unclear how much that number is now, but if you want it, better late than never.

The base price for the GMC Jimmy convertible is $129,950, which includes the cost of buying a new 2023 Sierra or Silverado. From there, several options are available that can increase the price of the truck. Based on the options presented in the Instagram post, a fully loaded GMC Jimmy Flat Out Autos will set someone back at about $143,250.

But for that price, you get an upgraded 3.5″ Fox / BDS Suspension with remote shock reservoir, epic workmanship that retains all the goodies one would expect from a modern GM truck, and all the things you need to get out and about with the truck when it’s delivered.

Flat Out Autos starts builds with a single cab GMC Sierra or a long bed Chevrolet Silverado with a 5.3 liter 4WD V8. Next, they streamlined the chassis using all of the built-in suspension components, and the rear of the cab and the front of the Crew Cab were opened and structurally welded to the cab’s internal structure to provide the “Uni-Body”.

From there, a special removable glass roof that blends in seamlessly with the truck’s lines is placed at the rear. The removable top comes standard in fiberglass with visible carbon fiber and painted carbon fiber as optional upgrades.

The back of the Jimmy is finished like the front, with all seating surfaces wrapped in Katskin leather. The exterior is styled with either an AT4 / Trail boss grille and bumper or a classier Denali or High Country chrome bumper, whichever customers prefer.

Offered between 1970 and 1991, the GMC Jimmy was the Big Red version of the iconic K5 Chevy Blazer, providing all the good old classic SUV goodies before being replaced by the GMC Yukon. Unsurprisingly, some people are calling for the return of Jimmy’s GMC nameplate. Now, GM Authority showcases what a modern GMC Jimmy might look like.

For now, there’s no indication that GM plans actually to develop and launch a modern GMC Jimmy. Instead, we made this thing just for fun to see what it would look like.

2023 GMC Jimmy AT4X

Let’s start with the GMC Jimmy AT4X. Up front, we see the familiar headlights and rectangular air intake, as well as a massive bumper-mounted bash bar that rises to the GMC logo on the grille. A front-mounted winch is also included, as are red tow hooks and a prominent front skid plate.

Moving on to profile, our modern GMC Jimmy AT4X runs standout Goodyear Wrangler tires, while rocker bars help complete underbody protection.

As for our GMC Jimmy Denali, we traded our off-road running gear for larger-diameter wheels. The rear design is also somewhat similar to the GMC Hummer EV SUV, with black plastic trim between the tailgate and rear three-quarter window depicting the US flag. And of course, we can’t forget the tailgate-mounted spare tire.

As for the powertrain, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B petrol engine from the third-generation Canyon should fit the bill, with a rated output of 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

2023 GMC Jimmy Price

At this point, pricing information isn’t available, but given the highly specialized nature of the work, we’d guess it wouldn’t be cheap.

However, this looks promising for the GMC Jimmy fans out there who crave a modern look on the signage. The base price for the conversion starts at $129,950.

2023 GMC Jimmy Release Date

More details will likely be announced in the weeks leading up to the 2022 SEMA event, which opens on November 1, and Flat Out Autos plans to build 25 units.

Verdict

The 2023 GMC Jimmy is an off-road-capable body-on-frame SUV that’s most likely to find its way onto suburban roads—though this won’t matter much to SUV-hungry buyers, who will forego on-road concessions to enjoy the aura rough off-road. The same 3.6-liter V-6 as the pickup, and hopefully, a turbo-diesel.

This new GMC vehicle is expected to be released within the next few years, with a starting price of around $30,000. Stay tuned, We’ll keep you informed about new developments regarding the 2023 GMC Jimmy, so bookmark our website for regular Jimmy news and other interesting GMC facts coverage.
