2019 GMC Sierra 1500: New Pickup Truck Elevation Edition Towing Capacity Review

Posted on

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Positioned more premium than other trucks in the segment but capable of towing up to 12,200 pounds, buyers of the 2019 GMC Sierra have a wide range of high-end features to choose from, and there are now six engine/transmission combinations, including turbodiesel.

Go for the 6.2-liter V8 and you’ll receive a 420-horsepower engine that uses an excellent 10-speed automatic transmission.

It’s a high-end truck, and the cabin is roomy, but the interior design isn’t the best in class. The GMC Sierra lacks some of the features offered on other trucks, including adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring that also takes into account the trailer you’re towing.

Beneath the new, modern, angular look of the GMC Sierra 2019 is a new platform, which is longer and lighter than the previous generation. The interior is roomier and has new high-end options, and GMC has introduced features that make it easier to tow trailers or carry loads.

All new from the ground up, the angular and sculpted 2019 GMC Sierra is longer, roomier and lighter than the previous truck, yet still powerful. Its key changes keep it competitive in a rapidly changing group that includes the recently updated Ford F-150 and the new Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado for 2019.

The GMC Sierra is different from the Silverado on which it is based. The biggest differentiator is GMC’s exterior styling, more premium interior, and features only available at GMC.

The lines range from basic work trucks to the super luxury Denali. Maximum payload and towing capacities are excellent, and the short berth, the most popular bed length for full-size trucks, is now the largest in its segment.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Review

GMC launches the new 2019 Sierra 1500 at the North American tip of St. John’s, Newfoundland, in Canada’s easternmost tip — a way of conveying that the new Sierra is a very different truck from the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, finally, after years of joint badge and body panel engineering. With GMC’s mission to be “Professional Grade Trucks and SUVs”, doing something unconventional is to be expected. Making a truck better than the Silverado is also to be expected.

2019 GMC Sierra

But aside from a few exclusive features and a few distinct exterior styling, there’s not much difference between the Silverado and the Sierra, inside or out. All of the impressive upgrades we’ve seen for the 2019 Silverado also carry over to the Sierra — a new, completely boxy frame; optimized lightweight material mix in the body, bed and chassis; all six powertrain options; slick new trailer app; and much more.

Since we’ll be detailing these technical improvements in a future Silverado review, we won’t go into them at length in this review, but you can read about them here. Suffice to say, GM spent a lot of development money on systems and components that made the truck perform better and made it easier to own and use. But the company keeps some stuff for Sierra exclusively.

Verdict

Quieter, more capable and more spacious than ever, the redesigned 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 works beautifully but disappoints with subpar materials and interior design.

Versus competitors

Few competitors can touch on the power and versatility of the 6.2-liter V-8 and 10-speed transmission, and GMC’s bed tech is downright useful, but Ford and (especially) Ram have interiors that leave GM’s premium trucks behind. brand in the dust.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Features

Style aside, there are only two items on the feature list that make the Sierra even more special than the Silverado, and both are cargo related. First up is the magical MultiPro Tailgate, a new rethink of the tailgate that really proves its worth in versatility and utility. Configurable into one of six different positions, it gives Sierra owners more options for hauling cargo than Silverado owners get.

We loaded the aforementioned cargo—an odd mix of shapes and sizes—into the bed and easily secured it, something that would have been much more challenging in the Silverado, or really any other .pickup without the Sierra novel, adjustable tailgate.

Better yet: The MultiPro Tailgate is standard from mid-level trims (AT4 and SLT) and up and can be equipped with a Bluetooth-connected accessory speaker setup for tailgate parties.

Second is the CarbonPro bed where the inner surface of the Sierra bed is made of molded carbon fiber instead of steel or aluminum (or both). It still has all the ties you need in a functional bed and features all the increased width and space from the new Sierra standard bed, but is reportedly nearly indestructible, according to GMC.

The property of resin-impregnated carbon fiber is that you can’t really damage it; it can crack and break, but making a dent by banging it or dropping something on it is impossible.

We may need to test this durability versus the Ford F-150’s all-aluminum box and other standard steel-bed GM pickups in the near future.

GMC Sierra 1500 Interior

Sharp and luxurious, the interior of the GMC Sierra is classy and has plenty of soft-touch surfaces, but doesn’t raise the bar in design. The cabin is amazingly roomy and quiet, and the heads-up display is large and easy to read.

The seats are comfortable, and if you get the 5-seater Sierra, there’s plenty of storage in the center cargo area. There’s also a clever side-hinged storage area at the front of the rear passenger seat.

While Sierra now has a start button for the first time, you can’t get anything but a column shifter and a manual tilt/telescope wheel.

GMC Sierra 1500 Exterior

The biggest visual difference between the 2019 GMC Sierra and its Chevrolet Silverado kin is the styling, but that’s not all. GMC has a high-tech solution for tailgate access with the MultiPro tailgate, which allows you to access the gears in six different ways.

One position creates a tailgate ladder and uses a small bed handle for easy climbing. While the new Sierra features a power retractable ladder, a button on the back brings the steps closer to the bed.

Also offered exclusively at the Sierra is a carbon fiber bed. The AT4’s off-road trim is designed to be taller and has dark exterior accents.

2019 New Generation GMC Sierra 1500, Hard Folding Tonneau Cover by iD Select®. This stylish folding tonneau cover features a low profile design with hard vinyl panels encased in an aluminum frame.

Engineered for durability, this cover is resistant to damage, cracking, or warping under regular exposure to UV rays, acid rain, oily contaminants, or other air pollutants.

The section frame is secured to the bottom of the bed rail with clamps specifically for your make and model truck bed design. No drilling or cutting required for installation.

For those who prefer hard shell tonneau covers over retraction or roll-up styles, iD Select offers this great value tri-fold tonneau cover. Sturdy textured vinyl panels are encased in an aluminum frame that folds into three sections.

Each of the three sections is released sequentially from the back of the truck to the front, stacking on top of each other near the cab. When the cover is folded shut, your vehicle’s locking tailgate handle provides protection from unwanted intruders.

Since this enclosure has a low profile design that reduces wind resistance, you will notice fuel savings during road driving every time the cover is closed.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited is not the all-new Sierra that debuted this year. In contrast, the Sierra 1500 Limited is the last of the Sierra generation to come out. Yes, it’s an old truck, and sold with a new truck.

This may seem odd, but the practice is quite well established among certain manufacturers. The advantage for buyers is price — the Sierra 1500 Limited is cheaper than the all-new Sierra. And because the new Sierra isn’t a very different truck, the Sierra 1500 Limited actually represents significant value.

The biggest catch is that the Sierra 1500 Limited is, well, limited to just one cabin and bed configuration (double cab and standard bed) with one engine and transmission combination.

Furthermore, it’s offered in just two trim levels, and both are at the bottom of the range. It is available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

If a double taxi suits your needs and you’re not too picky and need a long list of conveniences, the Sierra 1500 Limited is a good way to save some money.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Engine

The 2019 GMC Sierra will be offered with a choice of six engine/transmission combinations, including two different versions of GM’s 5.3-liter V8. For 2019, there are two types of cylinder management systems to improve fuel economy.

Active Fuel Economy is the more popular cylinder cut-off system that has helped increase the mpg of GM trucks. New for 2019 is Dynamic Fuel Management, which is designed to strike a fine balance between efficiency and power demand.

This allows the engine to operate anywhere between two and eight cylinders, in 17 different patterns. The new Sierra was initially available with a 5.3-liter V8, as well as a 6.2-liter. A 4.3-liter V6 engine, a 2.7-liter turbo-4, and an upcoming 3.0-liter inline-6 turbodiesel with a 10-speed automatic transmission will follow.

  • 4.3 liter V6 (6 speed automatic)

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 For Sale

A nearly sampled Sierra Denali I costs $67,595 (all prices include shipping), while the “lesser” SLT I drove came in at $59,495. Denalis sells well for GMC, making up a third of the total volume across the brand’s lineup, so people shouldn’t be afraid to spend money on their trucks here.

If you’re looking for a more premium Silverado, or just something that enjoys all the under-the-hood upgrades that go into both trucks but with a more conventional styling and slick MultiPro Tailgate, the new Sierra is a solid choice — but for my money, the SLT will be the preferred choice.

It’s clear that GM spent all of the development money on the capabilities of this new truck and not the amenities. If function is more important to you than form, then Sierra is sure to appeal for its impressive capabilities. But if you think that luxury brand trucks should have true luxury, you’ll want to shop elsewhere.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Price

The 2019 GMC Sierra will be sold in regular, double, and crew cabin layouts, but the most popular combination is expected to be a crew cabin with a short berth. Prices on the Sierra base crew cab work truck start at around $37,000, including destination. That’s when equipped with a 5.3 liter V-8. The base price for a regular cab model, or a model with a smaller engine, will be cheaper to enter.

The Denalis we drove, which comes with an optional 6.2-liter V8, costs around $67,000. The price sounds high, but it competes with the same half a ton from Ford, Ram and Chevrolet. But in some of those cases, there are features available – such as adaptive cruise control, more advanced towing technology – that GM doesn’t offer.
