New 2027 GMC 1500: Everything We Know So Far

Posted on

2027 GMC 1500 has been regenerated over time, making it better than ever. This model is Chevy’s version as the oldest of the Big Three full-size pickup trucks. Although it has received incremental improvements throughout its lifespan, GMC plans to debut a new generation of the Sierra.

The report we’re releasing right now is still speculative, but the next-generation GM truck is expected to arrive in 2027. We invite everyone to follow along with everything we know so far about the redesigned 2027 GMC 1500.

2027 GMC 1500 Reviews

The GMC Sierra 1500 is expected to be redesigned in 2027 with the addition of production in Orion Township, Michigan, according to Automotive News. It should be noted that only the new Sierra 1500 is expected in 2027, while the heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models are reportedly scheduled for the following year, 2028. There has been speculation about the addition of a hybrid powertrain, but nothing has been confirmed.

A Car and Driver photographer, via our reference GM-Trucks website, recently captured a camouflaged version of the next-generation Sierra being tested, giving us a first glimpse of what to expect. Based on the images, which the outlet claims are of the Denali model, the 2027 Sierra features a unique grille design, an alternative headlight layout, and Bridgestone Alenza tires mounted on 22-inch alloy wheels.

The hood features a power bulge in the center and vertically oriented front tow hooks. At the rear, the latest-generation Sierra features a rear bumper with integrated steps at the corners and what appears to be a multi-function tailgate.

And, according to GM Authority, the upcoming Sierra 1500 will get a panoramic sunroof, though this will likely be limited to higher-end and off-road trims.

What We Expect

The all-new 2027 GMC 1500 is expected to introduce an all-new model, representing the first model year of the fifth-generation truck. Here’s what we expect from the next-generation Sierra 1500:

2027 GMC 1500

Drive system

  • The next-generation/sixth-generation GM Small Block gasoline engine boasts significant performance and efficiency improvements, including a 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the current model. The sixth-generation Small Block engine will be produced at GM’s Flint Engine Plant, which received a $579 million investment to build it.
  • The Duramax 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbo diesel engine and the 2.7L I4 L3B turbocharged gasoline engine, also known as the TurboMax, are expected to remain.
  • A new plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV) system is also expected as part of GM’s shift in strategy to offer PHEV models.
  • Design: an all-new exterior design that will be an evolution of the design seen on the current model.
  • Cabin: updated interior with the latest infotainment system.
  • Architecture: an updated platform known as T1-2, the latest version of the T1 platform.
  • Improved driving characteristics and capabilities, including carefree driving, towing and hauling, plus new comfort and convenience features.

We expect the 2027 GMC 1500 model lineup, consisting of the 2500 HD and 3500 HD models, to remain the same with only minor changes compared to the 2025 and 2026 models. An all-new Sierra HD is expected for the 2028 model year, adopting generational improvements from the 2027 Sierra 1500.

2027 GMC 1500 Report

In a recent letter to shareholders, GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed that the new 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra will launch this year.

The automakers’ fourth-quarter 2025 earnings report simply stated, “Chevrolet and GMC will introduce new Silverado and Sierra this year.”

This confirmation further reinforces what we’ve seen from spy photos and leaked designs, which were later turned into AI renderings. Simply put, we’ve known something was coming for a while, and it’s going to be a major overhaul for both trucks.

Everything from design, drivetrain, technology, trim levels, packages and more will be overhauled for the 2027 model year.

2027 GMC 1500 Prototype

The Sierra 1500 Denali prototype features the production lighting system hidden under camouflage, with portions of its signature LED headlights, projector headlight units, and bumper-mounted foglights visible. The Denali 1500’s grille, consisting of approximately 10 thin horizontal slats, is visible without camouflage netting for the first time. The prototype rides on Bridgestone Alenza tires, the Denali truck’s flagship tires, on 22- or 24-inch alloy wheels.

The body design can’t hide the new Sierra’s bolder surface developments, which are applied to its front and rear fenders. The flared rear end and fenders are inspired by the aggressive styling of the Sierra’s mid-size sibling, the GMC Canyon. The squared-off wheel arches appear to be borrowed from the GMC Sierra EV.

In addition to the unique side body surface development, we see further differences between the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 and its competitor, the Chevy Silverado. The GMC gets a unique hood design featuring a wide power bulge in the center of the hood (the Silverado has two bulges that cover the outer third of the hood). The front bumper also shows differences from what we’ve seen on less camouflaged 2027 Silverado prototypes, with the GMC featuring vertically oriented tow hooks and revised lower air intakes.

Details of the tailgate are visible through the camouflage, and we can see the cutout for the Sierra 1500’s new multi-function tailgate. These new photos strongly suggest that GMC’s new full-size truck will adopt the MultiPro tailgate used on the Sierra EV, albeit integrated into a unique tailgate with a different overall styling.

2027 GMC 1500 Exterior

The best look at these new trucks is for the 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 leaked from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which we then turned into an AI rendering here.

2027 GMC 1500

Essentially, it’s an evolutionary change to the exterior with some key changes including flatter wheel arches, new exhaust tips, and the possible disappearance of the hood antenna.

The design is very similar to the 2025 Chevy Tahoe refresh and this makes sense considering designers often want to keep their vehicles looking similar across a brand’s product line.

2027 GMC 1500 Interior

We’ve gotten a good look inside another 2027 Sierra 1500 AT4 prototype, revealing key elements of the new truck’s interior. We now have a look at the Sierra’s all-new interior, with a dashboard design and display layout unlike anything we’ve seen in the GMC lineup.

2027 GMC 1500

The 2027 GMC 1500 Sierra will undoubtedly feature a large landscape infotainment screen that dominates the center console. The HVAC vents have been moved below the screen, just above a row of GMC-style buttons. Another row of buttons sits at the bottom of the console. The transmission tunnel features a storage compartment with what appears to be an inductive phone charger. Cup holders from the Sierra EV pickup appear to be used on this new ICE pickup. A large armrest and storage area are also available, covered in camouflage.

The same driver instrumentation display found on the Sierra EV appears to be used on the 2027 Sierra 1500 as well, but while the EV’s display protrudes from the dashboard area, this ICE truck has it all wrapped up in a clean-lined dashboard.

The new 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 will use the shift lever from the Sierra EV, eliminating the bulky and cumbersome shift lever from the transmission tunnel, resulting in significantly more space between the front passengers.

The interior dashboard layout will undergo a change, with the infotainment screen being more integrated into the dashboard. The 2023 model year refresh overhauled the interior dashboard to make it more competitive, but that was really just a temporary solution until designers could start from scratch.

For seating comfort, the new generation of SUVs and EVs all feature seats with wider bases and softer seating surfaces.

Tech

The current Sierra 1500 already emphasizes technology, and the 2027 redesign will likely enhance that. Instead of the base 7.0-inch and 13.4-inch touchscreens used on the 2026 model, the new 2027 Sierra 1500 will likely feature a standard 16.8-inch touchscreen, similar to the one seen on the Sierra EV.

2027 GMC 1500

A standard driver’s display screen can be included, while a head-up display and digital rearview mirror remain optional. Expect plenty of USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad. Hopefully, these technological enhancements won’t replace the traditional, easy-to-use buttons and knobs for basic functions.

Config

While the 2027 Sierra 1500 continues to evolve, it will still offer the same cab and bed options. Up front, there will be a two-door Regular Cab, a four-door Double Cab, or a larger four-door Crew Cab.

At the rear, buyers can choose between short, medium, and long tubs. Previous models offered lengths of 5.8 feet, 6.6 feet, and 8.0 feet.

2027 GMC 1500 Engine

In the 2027 GMC 1500 model, some power train components will likely be retained from the current generation, and others will be new and improved.

One of the highlights is the arrival of a new small-block V8 engine. Power output is expected to exceed the 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of the current 5.3-liter V8, and the 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of the 6.2-liter V8. Fuel efficiency is also expected to be slightly better. A 10-speed automatic transmission is expected to remain with all V-8 engines.

The 2.7-liter turbocharged I-4 engine will likely remain, producing 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Similarly, the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel I-6 could return with 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque.

2027 GMC 1500 EV

There’s already an all-electric Sierra, but GMC could introduce an electric powertrain option for the conventional Sierra 1500. How that would work remains unknown. It could be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system for the V8 engine, improving fuel efficiency and performance.

2027 GMC 1500

Alternatively, it could adopt an extended-range EV (EREV) configuration, where a smaller engine, such as a turbocharged I4, is used as a generator for an electric motor that drives the wheels, instead of driving the wheels themselves. Rivals Ford and Ram have already announced EREV drivetrains for their half-ton trucks.

Safety

Expect similar active safety and driver assistance features on the 2027 Sierra 1500 as on the 2026 model. These features are likely to include automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. General Motors’ Super Cruise hands-free driving system will be optional or included in the truck’s specifications.

Competitor

  1. Ford F- 150
  2. Toyota Tundra
  3. Ram 1500
  4. Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2027 GMC 1500 Release Date

We expect the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 to begin production in the second half of 2026 and the 2027 Sierra HD models to begin production in the first half of 2026.

Also, These trucks are expected to debut around the second quarter of 2026 and go on sale later this year and We expect 2027 Sierra series production to continue at the following three plants, two in the US and one in Mexico.

Verdict

The upcoming 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 looks set to mark a major step forward for GMC’s full-size truck lineup. Early prototypes and industry reports point to a bold design update, a more advanced cabin, and a stronger lineup of powertrains—including updated V-8 engines and the returning Duramax option. Add the possibility of a hybrid system and improved towing capability, and the next Sierra could easily remain one of the most compelling trucks in its class alongside rivals like the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra.
