2027 GMC Canyon: New Midsize Trucks Specs, Price and Review

Posted on

2027 GMC Canyon It’s a GMC model that people will want, and the midsize GMC Canyon is a high-performance version of the Chevy Colorado that still has a lot of power in the truck market. They have the same fundamental design, which includes a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 310 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, the Canyon doesn’t come in the basic work truck grade and has enough unique design options to set it apart from the Chevy.

There is also a Denali trim that has enough chrome, leather, electronics, and luxury features to live up to its name. All Canyons have a four-door cab and a 5.5-foot bed. You can choose between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

The AT4X AEV Edition is for the serious off-road enthusiast, and it can tow up to 7,700 pounds, which is the most in its class. The GMC Canyon is worth the extra money because it is a reliable workhorse. The GMC Canyon is one of our favorite cars in its class, and it made our Editors’ Choice list for 2025.

2027 GMC Canyon Review

The 2027 GMC Canyon will be the fifth model year of the third generation of the midsize pickup truck. We expect it to have a mid-cycle refresh or some small improvements (assuming the 2026 model year gets one).

2027 GMC Canyon: New Midsize Trucks Specs, Price and Review

The 2023 GMC Canyon got a thorough makeover (reengineering and redesign) for the third generation. The 2024 GMC Canyon got some little changes, mostly because of the new Canyon AT4X AEV Edition, and the 2025 GMC Canyon got some small changes as well. The 2026 Canyon will get a new look, but if it doesn’t, there will be little tweaks that will push out the new look until the 2027 model year.

What’s New

The improvements for 2027 are still a secret, even though the design was changed two years ago. We think the new Nightfall Edition is a blackout package, and there are three new exterior colors: Glacier Metallic, Desert Sun, and Rapids Metallic. These colors replace Desert Sand Metallic, Solar Flare Metallic, and Dynamic Blue Metallic.

The Elevation, AT4, and Denali all come with the ProGrade Trailer System as standard. The Elevation and AT4 also come with the Safety Plus Package as standard. The Technology Plus Package now comes with a sunroof and Bose sound system.

2027 GMC Canyon Changes

We don’t know yet if the 2027 Canyon will have a lot of small alterations or a whole new look. If the 2027 model does get some small tweaks, the refresh will probably come out for the 2026 model year.

2027 GMC Canyon Models

We think that the 2027 GMC Canyon will still only be available as a midsize pickup truck with a Crew Cab and Short Bed, and in 2WD or 4WD, with the following trim levels (product numbers in parentheses):

  • Height: 2WD or 4WD (T4C43)
  • AT4: Only 4WD (T4E43)
  • Denali: 4WD Only (T4F43)

Platform

The 2027 GMC Canyon will still use the upgraded 31XX-2 platform, which is also used by the 2027 Chevy Colorado, its cousin.

2027 GMC Canyon Interior

The 2027 Canyon will still only be available with one seating arrangement. This setup has two front bucket seats (for two people) and a bench seat in the second row (for three people), making it a 2-3 seat layout.

GMC has added some much-needed tech to the inside of the Canyon. You can get an underbody camera and a head-up display. There is a digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel, and the gear lever and driving mode selection are easily placed next to it in the console’s design.

The deep trunk compartment has cup holders that are easy for both the driver and passenger to reach. The AT4X level comes with a head-up display and a strong seven-speaker Bose audio system as standard. The Elevation and AT4 trims have an 8.0-inch digital instrument panel, whereas the Denali and AT4X trims have a bigger 11.0-inch display.

Entertainment and Connectivity

Every Canyon has a high-end 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity, and the ability to connect wirelessly to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Denali and AT4X models come with wireless phone charging as standard, however the AT4 variation does not.

Even the lesser Elevation grade comes with GM’s Hitch View and Hitch Guidance technologies, which help you choose the correct trailer hitch. The Denali and AT4X are the only trims that come with a 360-degree camera, however the two lower-end trims get it for a lesser price.

2027 GMC Canyon Engine

The 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four engine in every Canyon makes 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, but we strongly suggest getting the optional all-wheel drive.

The Canyon has more power and torque than the V-6 engines in the Honda Ridgeline, Jeep Gladiator, and the bigger turbo-four in the Toyota Tacoma. We are still sad that the previous generation of trucks lost the slow but fuel-efficient Duramax Diesel engine.

The Canyon sports a robust chassis feel and well-weighted steering, as well as a firm brake pedal. In terms of ride and handling, the Canyon and Colorado are two of the best body-on-frame pickup trucks on the market right now.

Performance

The 2027 GMC Canyon will still have the 2.7L I4 L3B turbocharged gasoline engine with High-Output technology. This engine, called TurboMax, has 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. There is also the option of a new hybrid or plug-in hybrid powerplant.

The engine still has a mechanism that stops and starts the engine automatically. You can turn this feature off with a button inside the car, but it will turn back on every time you start the engine.

The only gearbox choice is GM’s second-generation 8-speed automatic.

The Elevation trim is the only one that comes with rear-wheel drive (RWD). The AT4 and Denali, on the other hand, only come with four-wheel drive (4WD). Models with all-wheel drive come with a two-speed automatic transfer case. The AT4X has electronic locking front and rear differentials that the driver can choose.

The AT4 and Denali models have four driving modes to choose from: Off-Road, Terrain, Tow/Haul, and Normal. They also have a display that shows how well they operate off-road. The AT4X model has a Baja driving mode.

2027 GMC Canyon Payload

The Elevation, AT4, and Denali versions of the 2018 GMC Canyon can tow up to 7,700 pounds. The Canyon AT4X can only hold 6,000 pounds, while the AT4X with the Edition 1 package can only hold 5,500 pounds.

2027 GMC Canyon MPG

The rear-wheel-drive Elevation model of the GMC Canyon gets the best gas mileage, with an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the interstate. Models with all-wheel drive have a little better gas mileage, with an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

The EPA also says that a Canyon pickup truck with dirt will obtain about 17 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the interstate. After the Canyon goes through a 75-mph test run, which is part of our comprehensive testing, we will update this information. Visit the EPA website for additional information about the Canyon’s fuel efficiency.

2027 GMC Canyon Price

Depending on the model and extras, the 2027 GMC Canyon is estimated to cost between $42,095 and $69,030. The Canyon is a lot more expensive than the Chevy, which shares most of its parts. It’s for people who want something distinct from what the bowtie brand offers and don’t mind paying for it.

That said, $50,000 is still a lot for a midsize pickup (Canyon Denali, we’re looking at you), so we think the Canyon AT4 is a better choice. It has a lot of standard features, like all-wheel drive, an 11.3-inch infotainment system, and a 2.0-inch liftgate, but it costs a lot less than the Denali trim. The AT4 also comes with heated front seats that can be adjusted by hand and a cool remote start.

2027 GMC Canyon Release Date

GM USA will put together the 2027 Canyon in its Wentzville factory in Missouri. At a later point, we will decide when production will begin. Check out GMC Canyon sales data for markets across the world.

Verdict

The 2027 GMC Canyon is the right size, has all the features you need, and has the best towing power in its class. It also has a little more elegance and style.
