2022 GMC Canyon Redesign is essentially a more glamorous version of the Chevy Colorado, although it is largely identical beneath the surface. Although these mid-size pickup trucks are hugely popular, they now face greater competition from alternatives such as the Ford Ranger and the Jeep Gladiator. Unlike other trucks in this class, GMC markets its mid-sizer as a premium pickup, although its top-of-the-line Denali model falls short of that expectation.
However, the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign can be chrome plated and is equipped with luxury features, such as heated and cooled seats. It’s also available with a trio of engines that include a powerful V-6 and a torque-rich four-cylinder diesel.
Like Colorado, the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign offers an extremely smooth ride and athletic handling for trucks that are not based on crossovers. This allows it to emulate full-size pickups – such as the GMC Sierra 1500 – with its outstanding towing and hauling capabilities.
GMC updated the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign with a revised front-end design, a cooler Denali version, and a new AT4 model. The latter isn’t quite as sturdy as the jacked, wide-bodied Chevy Colorado ZR2, but it’s undoubtedly the most off-roading-ready Canyon it is.
Replacing the previous All Terrain trim levels, the AT4 uses 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires articulated via an exclusive suspension setup. It also features unique exterior and interior styling, slips plates for underbody protection, and an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
The Denali deluxe trim level receives 20-inch wheels, additional chrome body trim, and a more distinct grille. Likewise, now comes standard with the heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and improved interior materials.
GM first demonstrated a second-generation Colorado in Thailand in 2011, with global sales starting in 2012. The US model arrived in 2014 along with its GMC 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign twin, making the 2022 date plausible, since an eight-year cycle isn’t too long for that. pickup, especially if it continues to receive additional updates.
For 2016, Colorado’s second year on the market, GM added an updated diesel variant and infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple Car Play, while 2017 saw the addition of the off-road-focused Colorado ZR2 to the lineup. The underside of the new bumper features a new cut for the fog lamps, which are coupled with a black painted centerpiece that is refined for the front crane hooks and a refined intake that sits just below the chrome Denali grille.
Compared to the outgoing 2020 GMC Canyon Denali, the front fascia of the new model appears a little busier, featuring a larger grille and a more prominent LED fog light housing. Two chrome fog light bezels also frame the LED headlights, helping to differentiate Denali from the smaller models.
While the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign looks a lot like the GMC Canyon AT4, there are some differences.
The chrome grille is obvious, but less noticeable differences include the AT4 red tow hook and black fog light bezel. The crane hooks on the Denali are painted black, while the fog lamp bezels are chrome plated, as we mentioned above.
In addition to the exterior changes, the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign also gets new Ash Wood exclusive front headrests and interior trim.
GMC has also made some major changes to the trim level structure for the popular mid-size pickup in 2021, the GM Authority revealed earlier this year. For 2020, the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign follows GMC’s traditional SL-SLE-SLT-Denali trim level structure.
For 2021, however, the base grade trim is Standard Elevation, while the SLE trim is replaced with Elevation, and the All-Terrain trim is replaced by AT4. The SLT trim has been removed and will not be replaced, although the Denali at the top of the range is alive.
We hope to see the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign getting better and better in some ways, we also hope the next third-generation GMC Canyon will be launched in or after the 2022 model year. Until then, we expect the current second-generation 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign to receive minor changes, updates, and improvements.

2022 GMC Canyon Redesign Engine
From the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign engine trio, we’ll steer you away from the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The taller model features a standard 308-hp 3.6 liters V-6 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The V-6 not only has cylinder deactivation to save fuel, but it is also one of the fastest mid-size pickups we’ve tested. The four-cylinder diesel engine sacrifices speed for fuel efficiency and towing capability.
Indeed, the Canyon’s diesel engine was surprisingly polished; however, doing so would burden the buyer with some change. The quality of the Canyon ride does not exceed its class but manages to strike a balance between soft and firm damping.
On bumpy and unpaved roads, it is very capable and will absorb most imperfections while turning off violence. The AT4 model is supposed to enhance the pickup’s off-road capability even further with an upgraded suspension.
At highway speeds, the Gorge is stable and relaxed. Around the city, its smaller dimensions and agility require less driver attention in traffic and within strict limits. The rugged brake pedals provided responsive feedback in the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign we tested.
Base 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign with four cylinders can tow 3,500 pounds and has a payload capacity of 1,599 pounds; with diesel, it can tow up to 7700 pounds and has a payload capacity of 1605 pounds.
2022 GMC Canyon Redesign MPG
The EPA predicts a 2021 gas-powered four-cylinder 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign will get up to 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Opting for the all-wheel-drive version will only lower the road rating by 1 mpg.
The V-6 engine paired with rear-wheel drive is expected to produce 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway; AWD drops these two numbers by 1 mpg each.
The government has yet to release a fuel economy rating for the diesel version of the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign, but last year’s model had an estimated 20/30 mpg city/highway with RWD and 19/28 mpg city/highway with AWD.

2022 GMC Canyon Redesign Price and Release Date
2022 GMC Canyon Changes GM is still planning the 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign and the related Chevrolet Colorado 2021 to arrive on time despite the COVID-19 pandemic. If the carmaker sticks to the plan, the two mid-size trucks should begin shipping to dealerships later this year.
The next-generation Chevrolet Colorado and 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign will go into production in early 2022, according to the Autoline Daily report, citing analyst firm Auto Forecast Solutions.
Autoline points out that the two mechanically identical mid-size trucks have maintained steady sales speeds since their debut, with 2017 sales once again projected to exceed 100,000 units.
We expect the next 2022 GMC Canyon Redesign to be priced the same as the current second-generation model and have a starting US price in the $ 20,000 range.
